Strategic Assessment“…full of singing expressivity and a lightness of tone…”
— Cincinnati Classical Concert Reviews
Pianist Liming Yang made his concert debut at the age of thirteen and has since performed in China, Hong Kong, and the United States as a soloist with orchestra, in solo recital, and in chamber music. Most recently, he won the CCM Piano Concerto Competition and performed Bartók’s Piano Concerto No. 3 with the CCM Philharmonia, a performance that drew praise from the local press for its lyricism and clarity.
Yang is also an experienced collaborative pianist, having performed with violinists, cellists, oboists, bassoonists, singers, and choirs in chamber concerts, studio performances, and degree recitals. He has appeared with the Cincinnati Youth Choir and as an invited performer on the Salon Music Series in Newport, Kentucky. Equally enthusiastic about contemporary music, he was invited to premiere “People and Their Nocturnal Light”, a new work for piano and erhu, in Shanghai.
Yang is passionate about teaching and works with students of every age and level, including adults. At the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, he teaches group piano and individual lessons to music majors, musical theatre students, and non-music majors, including complete beginners. His teaching ranges from reading and technique to lead-sheet playing, improvisation, functional skills, and pop piano, always with the goal of helping students become confident, independent musicians. He has also taught a private studio of students ranging in age from seven to eighteen, as well as adults.
His current lecture project, Beyond Imitation: Recordings as a Tool for Interpretation, examines how pianists can learn from the great recordings of Cortot, Fischer, Sofronitsky, Schnabel, and Lipatti, with Rachmaninoff’s Third Piano Concerto as a case study, while developing interpretations of their own.
Yang holds a Bachelor of Music from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music and a Master of Music from the Cleveland Institute of Music, and is completing a Doctor of Musical Arts in piano performance, with a cognate in piano pedagogy, at CCM, where he studies with Dror Biran. He has also worked with Jerome Lowenthal, Hung-Kuan Chen, Ursula Oppens, and Paul Schenly in masterclasses and lessons.
